Greetings!
Welcome to the Milwaukie Academy of the Arts. Located on the campus of Milwaukie High School, MAA is a charter school that provides students with an educational opportunity like no other in the area. Students engage in meaningful and rigorous learning experiences that are tied together in and through the arts. The small size of the school allows students to make a community of learning built on strong relationships with staff and students.
You are encouraged to consider participating in this school, but you should know that it will challenge you. As a student in MAA, you will be invited to apply your best understanding and creativity in projects and activities that reflect higher learning. You will be expected to fully participate, produce your very best work, and present it to others. This school is designed to engage your brain and your creativity, to stretch your thinking, and to prepare you for what comes after high school. You don’t have to be a Picasso or Gwen Stefani, but you should be prepared for a challenge. The results should surprise you.
If this sounds like the kind of school experience you want, you should apply! Be sure to attend an information session, or make an appointment to visit.
Have a great year,
Mark Pinder Principal, Milwaukie High School

How to Enroll for Milwaukie Academy of the Arts 1. Turn in completed application. MAA does not discriminate when enrolling students. If we have room anytime during the school year when a student applies to MAA, acceptance is granted. When the number of students exceeds the total enrollment amount, names will be put on a waiting list. If there are more applications than spaces for students before a school year begins, a lottery will take place. There are three levels in a lottery: current students and their siblings, students within the North Clackamas School District boundary, then all other applicants. 2. Wait for enrollment confirmation and additional information request. 3. Return completed additional information request.
How to keep your success on track in MAA. PARENTS – Helping your student through high school is a challenge! Here are suggestions to help you be supportive of your child: 1. Credits watch: Monitor progress toward earning the required number of credits in the required areas. Se the “Personal Education Plan” at the back of this course guide to monitor progress. Helping with forecasting each year will help ensure your child is getting the most of their education in MAA. 2. CIM: Together, monitor the progress toward earning the Certificate of Initial Mastery through successful work samples and state assessments (taken sophomore year). Students earn the Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM) by meeting performance standards on state tests and classroom work samples in Language Arts, Math, and Science. Students must also successfully complete two “Career Related Learning Experiences” (CRLEs) to meet the Focused Program of Study requirements. 3. Focused Program of Study: Discuss your child’s selection of a FPS, and help select Focused Electives that match that area. The six areas are: Arts & Communication, Business Management, Health Services, Human Resources, Industrial & Engineering and Natural Resources. 4. Semester Projects - Each semester each MAA student is expected to create an arts based project that demonstrates understanding of new knowledge gained in a core class. These projects can be based in one or more of the visual or performing arts, but must relate to a core class. These projects must also receive approval and assistance from both elective and core teachers. 5. Participation expectations: Students are expected to keep up with all classroom assignments, participate in all classroom activities and complete all out of class assignments on time according to teacher instructions. 6. Active learning: School is a place of learning, a place to ask questions and seek answers. Some subjects will be challenging, and you may need extra help. Seek out friends, create a group of “study buddies”, look for a tutor or ask a teacher for a time to come in before or after school for some extra assistance. MAA seeks to challenge all students, and this requires extra help sometimes. School is for learning. We learn when we ask questions and receive answers. This is your high school education, let us help you make it the best!
Making Honor Roll Honor roll will be awarded to students who are enrolled in at least six classes and who earn at least a 3.5 GPA during a semester grading period and a grade of “C” or better in all classes. Students whose GPA have improved by at least .5 within one semester will also be honored for their academic improvement.
